Rainbow Program
RED
The RED level can be used for children as young as 4. It emphasizes basic gymnastic motor skills, balance, strength, and proper landings. Basic run, landings from knee heights and a simplified ‘hurdle’ are taught on vault. Swinging, static hanging and support positions are taught on bars. On Beam, we introduce walking on low and medium (750mm) beams. Gymnasts learn a variety of static skills as well. On Floor Exercise many basic skills are introduced that will develop strength, body awareness coordination. Generally, most children can master all the RED skills after completing one session (12 weeks).
ORANGE
The ORANGE level continues build on the foundations started in the RED level. Basic squat and straddle vaults are introduced. Gymnasts continue to build confidence on Beam with basic skills moving across the beam. A variety of Floor basic skills are taught including forward and backward rolls as well as the introduction of handstands and cartwheels. On Bars casting from the hips, swinging and re-gripping are taught. Movement ’around’ the bar is introduced at this level. Overall there are more skills requiring strength expected too. Because of this it may take some children more that one or two sessions to complete this level.
YELLOW
The YELLOW level skills again build on the basics learned in RED and ORANGE. The squat and straddle vaults are taught on a chest high Vault. Bar skills include pullover to get onto the bar, two different dismounts and more strength skills that are part of skills in future levels. Beam skills are primarily jumps, turns and moving across the beam in a variety of movement patterns. Forward rolls on low beam are introduced. On Floor rolls are expected to be mastered without the use of the downhill wedge. Cartwheels and handstands have a greater degree of consistency to them as well. This level often takes two or three sessions to complete particularly if the child is under 7 years of age.
